To celebrate 50 years of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, the Love Basingstoke team spoke to 14 residents who have lived in the borough for around 50 years. Take a read of their stories below.

Pamela

The first 'Basingfolk' to share their story with us was Pamela. We met with Pamela on a windy day at Beggarwood Park. Aged 16-17 years old in the late 1960s, Pamela moved from Lewisham in London with her family to Basingstoke.

Bryn

Bryn was born in Enfield and came to the area in 1966, first living in Kings Furlong, then near Alton before moving back to Basingstoke in 1978. He worked in the housing department at the council before retiring in the 90s. Some of his earliest memories of the borough are from working whilst all the development was happening.

Sue

Moving to the area from Guildford in 1970 when she got married, she has lived here for 54 years.

Jane

Jane was born in Basingstoke and lived in Old Basing all her life. Jane recalls her time at infant school in Old Basing being among the first children to attend the new school.

Susan

Born in Redhill, Surrey, Sue lived at Frensham Little Pond before moving to Basingstoke as a young girl in 1965. They lived in a flat at Jacksons Garage in Wote street.

Debbie

Debbie was born during the Great Freeze of 1947 in The Red Lion in Basingstoke town centre where her father and grandmother were joint licensees. They moved when she was 10 months old to the corner of Winchester Road and Bounty Road, which later became a vet’s.

Jo

Jo’s parents lived in Basingstoke, she was born in Winchester Hospital and has lived in Basingstoke all her life except for 10 years when she was away for education.

Karen

Karen was born in Basingstoke, in The Shrubbery Maternity Home in 1967 on her mother’s birthday. They lived in Packenham Road before moving to Kempshott, just after Karen turned ten years old.

Rosalind

Rosalind came to Basingstoke in 1967 with her husband and three children. They moved here because her husband's company had transferred here.

Gary

Gary, a pastor at a church in Basingstoke Town Centre was born in Essex and moved to Basingstoke with his parents when his father got a job locally with the Civil Service in the 70s. He grew up in Kempshott.

Lizzy

Lizzy arrived in Basingstoke to work at the hospital as the first play therapist. She used to live behind the railway station.

Megha

Megha came to the UK in 1961 following her marriage to her late husband Babulal Naik. Babulal worked for a company based in West Croydon, at the time the company was offered to move to Basingstoke under the greater London overspill project. They moved to Basingstoke over 60 years ago to a new built house.

Criss

Criss came to Basingstoke 56 years ago, on 1 October in 1968 with his wife and two children. They moved with his company at the time, Honeywell and viewed Basingstoke as a good choice for education and employment.

Elaine

Elaine moved to Basingstoke with she was 7 years old and has lived here for 55 years. As a family they moved from Hackney in London to Popley in 1969.
