The programme of works by Russian composers begins with Prokofiev’s lively and tuneful Classical Symphony which takes Haydn's symphonies as its affectionate model, successfully updating the form to the early twentieth century
This is followed by Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto no. 1, one of the finest of the twentieth century. Its four movements include a hushed and poignant nocturne, an imaginative set of variations, and an unstoppable finale.
In the second half, his dazzling First Symphony reflects the optimism and experimentation of the early 1920s. Written as his graduation piece, it quickly became an international success.
Joining the orchestra is violinist Nemanja Radulović. A dynamic and captivating performer, he particularly enjoys playing with this orchestra and conductor in an exciting musical association.
The Philharmonia Orchestra is Anvil Arts' Orchestra in Partnership.
